Vojtěch Preissig was born on the 31st of July, 1873 in Světec, Bohemia. His father was a mining engineer. In 1884 he moved to Prague where he studied at the School of Applied Industrial Art from 1892 to 1896, then at the School of Decorative Architecture from 1897 to 1898. In 1897 he moved to Paris and worked for two years with the Czech Art Nouveau artist, Alphonse Mucha. His early, Secessionist, work was influenced by Japanese art and Symbolism. He returned to Prague in 1903 where he founded the periodical Česká Grafika, published the book Barevný lept a barevná rytina (Color Etchings and Color Engravings) in 1909 and opened his own graphics studio in 1905. Unfortunately, the graphics studio was not a financial success so he moved to the United States in 1910 and worked as an art instructor. Preissig remained in the United States until 1930.

Narodil se ve vile Jakobi v obci Světec. Na jeho počest je v obci Světec náměstí Vojtěcha Preissiga. Jeho otec byl důlní inženýr a v roce 1884 se přestěhovali do Prahy. Od jedenácti let studoval na 1. české reálce v Ječné ulici v Praze, kde v roce 1892 odmaturoval. V maturitním vysvědčení má oznámkované kreslení: „výborný, – práce vynikají hojností a dokonalým provedením“

About this typeface

Czeska was designed taking into account the woodcuts created by Czech artist Vojtech Preissig (1873-1944) during the early 20th century.

The beauty of the manual hand reflected in the strokes of an alphabet where imperfection is a virtue and provides the vigor and graphic power of the unique and unrepeatable. A vivid wood flavor that is appreciable in each stem, in every contour. A vitality to create a rhythm that moving away from the conventional, it does not lose its legibility.
Czeska comes with an OpenType feature that changes glyph designs alternatively when typing on the keyboard. It allows the user to increase the feeling of manual and organic texture wherever this typeface is used.

Czeska family includes a large variety of characters and ligatures (both for regular and italic styles).
