Monitor Design Information
TYPE BY Monitor, designed by Fred Smeijers in 2000, was expanded and re-released as a fully-equipped all-purpose sans serif in 2012.
Monitor was originally designed as a custom typeface for office use. Originally designed in only two weights, normal and bold, it was manually hinted for optimal screen use. Soon after its retail release in 2002, numerous customers requested additional weights — these were created by Smeijers in 2004, which brought Monitor to a family of 8 weights, suitable for a wide range of applications. For its 2012 re-release, Monitor has been fully equipped with italics, two additional widths: condensed and semi-condensed, small caps, and non-ranging figures. The result is a highly serviceable, no nonsense design whose details mix precision with warmth in the spirit of Gill Sans and Fresco Sans. Monitor now emerges, fighting-fit, from the office into the wider world of intelligent typography.
The character set comprises lining, and oldstyle figures (each in tabular and proportional widths); fractions; comprehensive superiors, inferiors, nominators and denominators; case sensitive punctuation sets; mathematical and monetary symbols; arrows; standard and discretionary ligatures; a set of stylistic alternates; and a complete range of accents for all Western, Central and East European languages based on the Latin script.
Monitor is available in OTF CFF, TTF, WOFF, and WOFF2 formats. Legacy font formats are available on request.
